Multi Sweep Hidden Camera Bug Detector

Many people have the feeling they're being watched or eavesdropped on. But this is an issue of particular importance for law enforcement personnel and spies. Sometimes while you're keeping tabs on others you also need to know whether somebody's keeping tabs on you. And its not like you can just ask and expect an honest answer. At those times, this device is your best friend. This wireless camera detector will expose both wired and wireless cameras, dead or alive. The ultra advanced hand held unit will also let you know about RF bugs and wiretaps in one of three ways: with an alarm, silent LED or silent vibration. Locates bugs on frequencies from 1 MHz to 6500 MHz. Alerts to VHF, UHF and GSM devices. This particular unit also has an internal Li-Ion battery, eliminating the need for pesky batteries. Best of all this unit is geared with the professional in mind. The built in compass will make locating and notating locations of bugs during large building sweeps a breeze. Included with this unit is also a set of ear buds, allowing you to sweet without distracting others.

Androgynous emo -- before & after

Androgynous emo -- before & after

Sometimes I spend quite a bit of time stuffing around with street art photos, so out of interest I thought to post a before and after comparison so you can judge whether it's worthwhile. On the left is a photo straight out of the camera and on the right is the picture after I'm done processing it (or butchering it, depending on your point of view). They may not be the best examples but you can get the idea.

Of course the artwork itself is meant to be the main focus. My aim in processing is to try and highlight or enhance the artwork (or frequently only a portion of a larger artwork), but also provide some context. That's why I like to maintain or enhance the textures like the bricks and wall features because, for me, that makes it more interesting. It's also possible to go the other way and make it look like a cartoon or a painting on a plain flat surface, but I reckon that loses some of the character that's provided by the rough surfaces, textures and pipes.

I realise some people will prefer the unadulterated version, and that's fine. If you're the artist of the subject matter and you don't like what I've done to it then I apologise but, well, that's the way it goes. I believe art it open to interpretation and that probably applies to street art more than most. I certainly do appreciate the colourful works around town and I try and credit the actual artist(s) where I'm able to, and I'm happy to be informed where I've been neglectful or erroneous.

Why I shoot in the RAW

Why I shoot in the RAW

Sculpture by Vince Vozzo - "new man"

This is not a comparison between using a polariser and not using one, but more to show the advantage of using the RAW format in digital SLRs (and advanced digicams) when it comes to recovering highlights.

The left photo is what I could expect to occur if I had outputted straight form the camera as a jpg and the right is the output of a RAW image processed in DXO Optics 5.3. (Photoshop does a great job too as well as others)

Note:
RAW images need manipulation and massaging but they do have more scope for editing and getting the best out of the camera.
A RAW image does take up a lot more hard drive space and also means more work, so it isn't for everyone.

Yes, you can manipulate and fix JPG images but there is more scope for fixing in a RAW image. I am a lazy post editing person and prefer to get it as good as possible in-camera rather than spend time photoshopping.

and yes, I neglected to fix the horizon in this photo.

Canon PowerShot S100 2MP Digital ELPH Camera Kit w/ 2x Optical Zoom

Canon's latest crowning achievement, the PowerShot S100, packs a high-quality digital camera into the tiny, elegant body of Canon's Digital Elph series. With this item, Canon becomes the first to produce such a small digital camera with high resolution. The super-popular Elph APS cameras were favored because users could slip them into shirt pockets and take them anywhere. Now the digital camera has truly come of age with this ultraportable model.
The PowerShot S100 uses the same durable stainless-steel case as the traditional Elph series cameras. It offers 2-megapixel resolution for high-quality photos and prints up to 8 by 10 inches. Canon provides the PowerShot S100 with a high-resolution, low-distortion, all-glass aspherical 2x zoom lens (and a 4x digital zoom as well). The 1.5-inch LCD monitor displays most camera settings with easy-to-understand icons and minimal text. The PowerShot S100 features a 0.37-inch CCD that creates full color or black-and-white images up to 1,600 x 1,200 pixels (it also offers a 640 x 480 pixel image size). The built-in flash uses a light guide and does not need a fresnel lens or a large reflector, making the camera even more compact.
The PowerShot S100 stores images on an 8 MB CompactFlash card. Adobe PhotoDeluxe and PhotoStitch control image management, editing, compositing, and printing, while ZoomBrowser EX or ImageBrowser produce self-running screen slide shows, automatic e-mail preparation, and auto layout. The camera uses a high-speed plug-and-play USB interface, plus it has NTSC-out so you can view your photos on your TV. It's fully compatible with both Mac and PC platforms.

A L of a collection Project 365(2) Day 98

A L of a collection Project 365(2) Day 98

Two maxims:

1.The qualities of your photographs are only as good as the lenses you use. There is little point in laying out for a decent camera and then adding budget lenses.
2.Once you have used a L series lens you are hooked; there is no going back! Although other EF lenses are very good and I am sure the likes of Sigma and Tamron make great lenses for Canon; according to reviews, they are not quite in the same league as L series lenses. That is why I am now a Canon L series fanboy.

There is a lot to like about the red ring lenses from the solid build quality to the smooth way they operate. When it comes to images; the sharpness, the colour and the creamy bokeh seem to be unbeatable. L series lenses might not make you a better photographer but they certainly help.

In my collection so far:-

Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM: the lens that came with the camera and the start of my L obsession. This is the brilliant walk around lens that I use most of the time. Not without its flaws; e.g. there is a trace of barrel distortion wide angle which thankfully can easily be remedied in Photoshop.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM: my next purchase because I wanted to get in close. I love this lens for how close you can get with it and the fact that you can use it hand held and at full aperture. It will make a great portrait lens. I love the versatility of zooms but for sheer quality, you can’t beat a prime!

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM: my latest lens takes the range to 200mm which is probably as far as I will want to go. Wildlife photographers or aircraft spotters like my friend Pete would probably find this limiting and would have probably go for the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM but that is nearly three times the price of the 70-200 and a lot heavier. I can neither justify nor do I really need that

If I ever feel that I need that extra range, I can buy the excellent Canon 1.4 extender which drops the lens by one stop in aperture and looses next to nothing in quality.

With the quantity of light we have in Spain, I am hoping that I won’t miss image stabilisation on this lens which would have near doubled the price. I’ll just have to adopt my technique to make sure I am using a fast enough shutter speed and thus avoid camera shake.

PS Purists would argue that it would have been more logical to have bought the Canon EF 24-70mm F2.8L USM Lens instead of the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM and avoid the overlap but then the ?200 discount on the kit lens was irresistible.

Nokton 35mm SC on M6

Nokton 35mm SC on M6

New M compatible lenses are hard to find these days. Fujiya Camara in Nakano, Tokyo had this single coated 35mm/1.4 in stock (but no hood unfortunately). I was also looking for the Ultron 28mm/2.0 but it was sold out.
The Nokton 35/40 Hood seems to be impossible to find in Japan at the moment. A vendor selling through Amazon.jp wants more than 50% over list price - disgusting!
The handling is very nice but I have yet to see the results from the lens - so cant comment on that yet.

Update Oct. 02 - 2011
Cosina is distributing LH-6 hoods to the vendors these days. Two days ago I noticed that Amazon.jp had a few at regular discounted price, yesterday I checked again, and they were all gone. Luckily I had placed an order with BIC Camera last week and they were able to deliver today. I hate to shoot without the protection of a hood.

I have shot 1,5 rolls with lens now. It is too little to make a qualified assessment, but I have noticed the following.
1. Focus shift - I have seen no signs of that.
2. Distortion - often mentioned in internet fora as a problem. If you really want to see it, you'll noticed a very slight barrel distortion if you shoot straight lines but when it is this little and if you really care, you probably should't shoot with a rangefinder.
3. Contrast/Color: Don't really se much difference between this and my Summicron 35/2 version 3 so far.
4. Flare resistence - excellent as reported many places. I shot several pictures with the sun barely outside the frame - with no problems.

Update Oct. 19 2011
5. The Out of Focus quality (bokeh) seems comparable to my Summicron.

A semi-candid portrait of my mom...

Strobist lighting info: Canon Xti and 50mm lens at f/5.6 for added sharpness, Sigma EF-500 DG ST fired from camera (vertical orientation), rotated upwards to bounce off ceiling. Extra vignetting added in lightroom.

I'm looking at it in windows xp now, and the colors are considerably worse than on OS X, on the same computer. Pretty strange...
Figured this out, firefox and internet explorer by default don't display the sRGB color spectrum correctly or something, there is a patch you can download to fix it. Look for it on google, it will greatly improve your viewing quality (Don't worry if you have Safari it works by default)
